Interesting advice for preparation for birth.
If the mind is busy, it cannot hear the body.
Is Holding Ice the Key to Birth Preparation?
Preparing for childbirth by holding ice may sound strange, but it actually helps to calm the mind in readiness for labor. This is because childbirth is more of a mental act than a physical one. While not many people talk about this openly, it's true. How our bodies respond to childbirth is directly linked to where our minds are. If you're tense and in pain, there's a higher likelihood that your mind will be filled with fear, anxiety, and doubt. Conversely, if you're calm and relaxed, your mind is more likely to feel calm and confident.
So, what does holding ice have to do with this? Well, what does holding ice feel like? It's probably not the most enjoyable thing you've ever done, but what's important is how well we manage the discomfort. When you focus on the sensation that the ice creates and fully surrender to and accept all the sensations it produces, other feelings in your body (such as pain, tension, fear) begin to bother you less. This is because WHEN THE MIND IS BUSY, THE BODY CAN'T FEEL.
To prepare for childbirth, hold the ice in your hands for 1 minute as if you were experiencing a contraction, and notice the sensations created by the ice in your hands within this discomfort. Focus on all the sensations the ice creates on your skin.
Practice this mindfulness exercise for at least 21 days to cultivate mindfulness. Try holding the ice for 60 seconds.
